Linux experience

Though I hated Linux when I bought my laptop, I recently found interest in opensource software .Especially today at Python workshop when the speaker spoke at open source ,I got inspired and thought "Lets install Linux ". I have already done a bit of research and found that KDE looks much more cooler than gnome. So I did some inquiries on which OS will suit me and provide me KDE . One of my friend told me that OpenSuse is very good and it looks like Windows .So I got the live cd and tried out Suse with KDE. It looked real good and some of its graphics nd feel looked better than Windows . Also many of many friends warned me that you might end up loosing data if u r installing Linux. So I made a clever plan to not lose my data. I had Windows 7 which had very good disk Managemnt software . I made a 10 gb partition in Windows . I thought that it would be enough because Linux is light. Then I booted from the Live cd and started with installation .There were the usual installation options to select the time zone, time format ,etc .Then there was an option to create a partition. So I selected the partition to install. Till that it was fine. But then I found an option to select a boot loader. I didnt want any boot loader as I am fully satisfied with Windows loader. But while selecting the boot loader it warned my that the OS may not open without it. I had already learned that installing boot loader means the bootmgr of Windows OS will be stored within Grub. Nevertheless , I had to select Grub as my boot loader.I installed the OS. When I reinstalled my computer I found Grub taking care of my booting with a nice interface to select an OS. When Suse started , I found two problems . One is that out of 10gb I had alloted 9.3 gb was occupied .This is really bad because I heard that in Suse after installing its very difficult to resize partition. The second problem was more serious than the first. My screen was flickering with very thin black lines .So I finally thought , "screw it " and went to windows and deleted the 10 gb. Worst of my fears came true i.e the grub obviously loaded bootmgr in grub. So i could nt boot my Windows. I thought I will have to install a fresh installation and loose all my data. I panicked . But I had my Windows 7 dvd. When I booted the installation disc, it did not detect any os . But there was an option of system recovery and troubleshooting boot. I performed both the options .And i performed both the options .I was finally relieved that Windows loaded and my data is safe.It was overall a very good experience. I am presently planning to install Kubuntu . I have learned that messing with options actually teach u a lot of things.
